Subaru has unveiled new special edition variants of its rear-wheel-drive BRZ coupe and the all-wheel-drive WRX STI sports sedan, as revealed in a press release on Thursday.
The WRX STI Type RA, which stands for “record attempt,” is a part of Subaru’s ambition to set a record lap at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, utilizing the Type RA NBR race car. In comparison to the standard production WRX STI, this new edition is lighter, features enhanced power, comes with sporty aesthetic upgrades, and will be produced in limited quantities.
The Type RA is powered by the familiar 2.5-liter turbocharged horizontally opposed four-cylinder EJ25 engine, similar to that found in the STI for several years. What sets it apart are enhancements like a new cold air intake, a high-flow performance exhaust, a reprogrammed ECU, and upgraded pistons. These modifications increase the power output to 310 horsepower, just five more than the current STI. It retains the six-speed manual transmission seen in the regular STI but features a unique third gear ratio and a short-throw shifter. Additionally, the handling has been refined with Bilstein dampers throughout and an upgraded stability control system.
Subaru highlighted that the increase in power, revised gearing, and lighter weight contribute to improved acceleration, though specific performance metrics for the Type RA were not disclosed.
In terms of design updates, the Type RA sports a carbon-fiber roof, a carbon-fiber spoiler, and lightweight 19-inch BBS wheels. It also features red pinstriping, a new front splitter, an Ultrasuede-wrapped steering wheel, and distinct Type RA badging.
The BRZ tS also features its own enhancements to set it apart from the standard model. This special edition is equipped with “STI-tuned” SACHS dampers, as well as stiffeners attached to the subframe and chassis, which Subaru claims improve steering response. The tS is fitted with 18-inch STI wheels wrapped in 215/40 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, while Brembo brakes ensure effective stopping power. Additional upgrades include a new adjustable carbon-fiber spoiler on the rear and enhanced diffusers at both the front and rear of the vehicle.
Similar to the STI, the tS is adorned with red pinstriping. Both models will be available exclusively in Subaru’s dark blue, black, or white color options.
Production will be limited to just 500 units for each special edition model, with Subaru planning to have them available at dealerships in early 2018. Pricing details have yet to be announced.
