There are signs pointing towards Subaru exploring electrification for its esteemed “STI” line. A recent application for a trademark undertaking in the German patent/trademark office, originally unearthed by CarBuzz, aims to protect the “STe” designation, potentially signaling Subaru’s intentions to introduce hybrid or fully electric high-performance models to its range.
This, however, is merely an application and not an officially approved trademark, nor does it necessarily confirm the automaker’s plans to adopt this moniker for any of its vehicles. Automakers regularly trademark and patent concepts that may never materialize. It is conceivable that Subaru could develop high-performance hybrid or electric cars while retaining the STI branding. Furthermore, it’s important to note that this trademark application originates from Germany, as highlighted earlier. Subaru has not lodged any trademark applications in the United States since October 2021.
Although intriguing, Subaru presently does not offer any performance-focused hybrid models or STIs, with only one fully electric vehicle in its lineup, the Solterra, essentially a rebranded Toyota bZ4x. At least the Subaru model has a legitimate name, unlike the perplexing name choice of the Toyota variant.
Reflecting on rumors from 2017, there was speculation about a hybrid iteration of the next WRX STI. While this has yet to materialize, the potential introduction of an STe model remains a possibility. Should Subaru pursue this direction, collaboration with external entities might be necessary. Subaru does produce a hybridized CVT system currently featured in the Crosstrek, a model that does not prioritize performance attributes.
Considering Subaru’s history and expertise, it could be well-positioned to create an affordable hybrid performance vehicle. Envisioning an STe model equipped with a flat-four engine and electric motor, one can anticipate a positive reception, especially compared to a lackluster fully electric STI model.
