The Angeles Crest Highway, a picturesque route in Southern California, is well-known for its stunning vistas as well as its hazards. Its numerous blind curves have become sites of recurrent accidents, proving that a thrilling drive can quickly become perilous. A recent high-speed crash serves as a stark reminder of this reality.

An Instagram video shared by @the.touge.police captured the aftermath of a collision involving a Chevrolet Corvette and a Subaru Crosstrek near Newcomb’s Ranch. Both cars were positioned in the same direction, engulfed in heavy white smoke. Bystanders quickly rushed to assist, many initially focusing on the Subaru, from which a leashed dog was safely retrieved. A person attending to the C6 Corvette was seen using a fire extinguisher, as the atmosphere shifted from urgent action to a sense of disbelief.

The images following the extrication are troubling. The head-on collision was so intense that the Subaru was almost unrecognizable, its engine compartment severely crushed against the front axle. Without the rear in decent condition, it would be challenging to identify the vehicle. The Corvette also suffered significant damage.

According to the Instagram post, the Corvette driver was reportedly going “at least 85 mph” when he swerved into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the Subaru.

A witness allegedly quoted in the post noted, “The Subaru couple and their dog seemed okay, but the Corvette driver’s right foot looked pretty messed up.”

The Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, responsible for the Angeles National Forest area where the crash occurred, has not released any statements about the incident. A review of the California Highway Patrol traffic incident database appears to show the most recent entries, potentially from within the last 24 hours.

Another image depicting the aftermath was posted on Reddit, claiming that the Corvette driver was traveling at 120 mph when control was lost. Reported injuries include a broken ankle for the Corvette driver, while the occupants of the Crosstrek reportedly only experienced shock. However, many commenters expressed skepticism regarding the alleged speed.

“While definitely still reckless and stupid, there is zero chance anyone was going 120,” one commenter stated. “Nowhere near enough damage and the cars ended up next to each other.”

Another added, “[N]o where close to 120 mph. There wouldn’t be anything left of those cars except a twisted frame. Probably closer to 45 mph after a panic brake.”

Nonetheless, a social media post from the L.A. Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau confirmed that three individuals were airlifted from the Angeles Crest Highway area to a trauma center. Given the timing and location, it is likely that this post pertains to the incident involving the Corvette and Subaru. No updates on the victims’ conditions have been shared, and the investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Twisty two-lane mountain roads attract driving enthusiasts, but the solid yellow lines serve as stark reminders: these roads are public, and reckless passing can be hazardous. If you see double solid yellows, it’s a sign to reduce your speed and drive cautiously. Unfortunately, many disregard these warnings.
