Smart is further evolving its identity with the introduction of the #5 electric crossover, marking the largest vehicle ever to carry the Smart name. It becomes the third new model unveiled by the manufacturer, following the #1 and #3, and its size clearly positions it against the Tesla Model Y.
At 185 inches long, the #5 has dimensions strikingly similar to Tesla’s top-selling vehicle. It enters a competitive segment alongside other strong electric crossovers from brands like Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, and Ford, so it must offer something distinct to attract buyers.
We had a good preview of the #5’s design when Smart revealed the #5 Concept, which showcased the production version with a higher suspension and an adventurous style. The final model presents a more upright appearance, with a conventional SUV silhouette reminiscent of the smaller Mercedes-Benz EQB.

Targeted as an electric family crossover suitable for outdoor activities, the #5 offers an Adventurers’ Collection pack that includes features like a roof light bar, underbody protection, roof carrier, side steps, and a ladder. While this package enhances its adventurous look, the vehicle does not actually have any improvements in ground clearance or off-road capabilities.
Smart emphasizes the spaciousness and technological features of the #5’s interior. It boasts 34 storage compartments, including a 2.5 cubic-foot front trunk and a maximum of 54 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded down. A standout feature is the impressive 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display, complemented by a 10.3-inch digital gauge cluster and two high-resolution 13-inch AMOLED displays, one positioned for the passenger’s use.
Infotainment visuals are created using Unreal Engine, which necessitates significant processing power to run seamlessly across all displays. This power is supplied by an AMD V2000 eight-core integrated CPU and GPU tailored for automotive applications and mini PCs.
The Smart #5 utilizes an 800-volt platform enabling rapid charging for its 100-kilowatt-hour battery, achieving a charge from 10 to 80% in just 15 minutes. The anticipated range stands at an impressive 460 miles, based on the optimistic Chinese CLTC cycle; however, the real-world range is likely to be more around 300-320 miles.
CarNewsChina indicates that while detailed specifications of the powertrain are not yet available, entry-level models will feature a single motor delivering either 335 or 358 horsepower. Additionally, a dual-motor all-wheel drive option will provide 579 horsepower. The highest-end model, carrying Brabus branding, is projected to push the total output of its dual-motor layout to 638 hp.
All versions of the #5 will be produced in China and will first hit the market there. Smart plans to expand sales to Europe in 2025. However, with potential increases in import duties on vehicles manufactured in China, the #5 might come at a premium price, potentially leading European buyers to prefer better-priced options that are locally assembled.
