The impressive physics of electric motors, offering maximum torque instantly, coupled with the plethora of videos showcasing electric vehicles (EVs) racing against high-performance gasoline cars, make it no surprise to see how quickly these electric cars can accelerate. Yet, every now and then, a video emerges that captivates us anew, demonstrating an extraordinary showdown between an EV and a traditional gas-powered vehicle, underscoring the remarkable advancements in automotive technology.
In this instance, a video featuring Rimac’s Concept_One hypercar defeating the Bugatti Veyron in a quarter-mile race encapsulates this excitement.
The footage originates from the YouTube channel of Wilton Classic & Supercar, a British event dedicated to the celebration of classic and supercars. The organizers transported their Bugatti Veyron to Croatia, home to Rimac, to pit the iconic VW A.G. model against the electric hypercar in a classic drag race on a brisk winter morning. Both all-wheel-drive contenders boast comparable power outputs achieved through different means: the Bugatti’s quad-turbocharged W-16 engine produces 987 horsepower, while the Concept_One harnesses 1,088 horsepower from four electric motors.
If this was the only instance of Rimac’s electric speedster overshadowing top hypercars, one might write it off as a unique occurrence. However, the Concept_One has also been seen outperforming other supercars like the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder in straight-line races, with at least one of those encounters involving the personal vehicle of a U.S. customer, thus indicating Rimac’s success as a rare electric supercar brand capable of competing with the industry’s elite, at least in terms of acceleration.
