Over two decades ago, the pioneering Spring Drive technology was introduced in a Grand Seiko timepiece. This iconic movement continues to serve as the foundation for the 9R series that propels all Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches. To mark this milestone, Grand Seiko has unveiled a new Spring Drive Chronograph GMT, taking inspiration from the summertime mountain terrain. This exceptional timepiece showcases a unique “dial-processing” technique that captures the Japanese reverence for the subtle progression of time, mirroring the shifting hues of summer dawns in that scenic locale. Essentially, Grand Seiko has infused its interpretation of nature into the dial.
More precisely, the reddish tint mirrors the morning glow witnessed by watchmakers, approximately half an hour before and after sunrise, as sunlight bathes the peaks of the Hotaka mountain range in a distinctive light. The dial’s color-shifting feature symbolizes this specific moment, achieved through a patented “Optical Multilayer Coating” process; aficionados will recognize this as a signature technology of the Seiko Epson watchmaking facility, where the resplendence of the Hotaka mountain range is captured. Through layers of nano-scale film, an effect is created where the dial exhibits varying shades depending on the viewing angle
The new SBGC275 showcases the robust and angular Tokyo Lion design. This bold motif is evident in the sharp case silhouette and claw-like, finely finished lugs, which juxtapose with the lustrous Zaratsu-polished surfaces. Resistant to depths of 200 meters, this timepiece is inherently versatile, albeit with certain considerations. The hour and minute hands are crafted for optimal readability, while the broad indexes further enhance the exemplary legibility that Grand Seiko is renowned for.
Crafted from high-strength titanium, the case and bracelet are approximately 30% lighter than stainless steel, exuding a brighter allure. The bracelet is designed for comfort, featuring thick, H-shaped links that ensure effortless wearability. The hour and minute hands, along with the hour markers, are treated with luminous Lumibrite in green, whereas the GMT hand and bezel numbers illuminate in blue, improving visibility in dim environments.
The timepiece is equipped with the Spring Drive Chronograph GMT Caliber 9R96, an iteration of the Caliber 9R86. Caliber 9R96 boasts an accuracy of ±10 seconds per month, or ±0.5 seconds per day, surpassing the renowned ±15 seconds per month precision of the Caliber 9R86.
