The enhancements bring more power, extended driving range, an improved infotainment display, navigation system upgrades, and other enhancements that elevate the performance of this midsize SUV manufactured in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Charging Capabilities

All ID4 models are charged via a plug-in port that supports three charging speeds. With the onboard 11 kW charger, the maximum charging rate is 175 kW for the 82 kWh battery and 140 kW for the 62 kWh battery, resulting in the following charge times:

2024 Volkswagen ID4 AWD
Improved charging speeds
  • 120V (Level 1) – 2 miles per hour, or approximately 80 hours for a full charge
  • 240V (Level 2) – 8 hours to charge the 82 kWh battery; 6.15 hours for the 62 kWh battery
  • 480V DC Fast Charging – 80% charge in 30 minutes or less

The ID4 Charging Plan+ includes 500 kWh of complimentary charging through the Electrify America app, usable at over 900 stations and 4,000 chargers in North America.

Additional charging is facilitated by regenerative braking, which converts kinetic energy into electric power when braking or coasting, subsequently storing it in the battery. Therefore, activities like city driving, rush-hour traffic, or downhill coasting aid in recharging the battery.

Driving Impressions

Clean Fleet Report tested the 2024 Volkswagen ID4 Pro S AWD, equipped with dual electric motors achieving a spirited 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds. This acceleration time is a second quicker than the rear-wheel drive ID4 with a single motor, which accomplishes the same speed in 5.9 seconds.

Enjoyable ride experience

There are four selectable drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom. Eco mode prioritizes efficient driving but reduces throttle response; Comfort mode, our preferred setting, balances efficient driving with responsive throttle feel; Sport mode offers heightened steering and throttle response; while Custom mode blends attributes of Comfort and Sport. All-wheel-drive models introduce Traction mode, designed for low-traction conditions, featuring continuous all-wheel drive up to speeds near 12 mph.

Engaging the B drive mode maximizes regenerative braking, optimizing battery recharge. Although the ID4 lacks full one-pedal driving capability that enables stopping without braking, it does decelerate to approximately 1-2 miles per hour. Upon applying the brake pedal for a complete stop, the Auto Hold feature keeps the vehicle stationary. Unlike many other EVs providing three regeneration levels via steering wheel paddles for customized driving style or road conditions, the ID4 only offers the B setting.

Under normal circumstances, except for full stops or emergencies, utilizing motor regeneration is the most convenient, effortless, and seamless method of driving an electric vehicle without needing to apply the brake pedal.

Driving Dynamics

The ID4 Pro S AWD showcases confident highway cruising capabilities with effortless passing of larger vehicles, thanks to instant torque availability at any speed. Negotiating high-speed or low-speed corners reveals predictable turn-in behavior attributed to the AWD system providing secure traction. Even during aggressive cornering, the 4,907-pound mass subtly shifts, yet the suspension is adept at maintaining stability and trajectory through the turns.

Benefiting from a low center of gravity

The low center of gravity, achieved by positioning the 1,105-pound batteries beneath the floor, results in a stable driving experience with neutral handling supported by the electric rack-and-pinion power steering. The ID4 Pro S AWD delivers a generally comfortable ride, effortlessly managing most road imperfections.

While the steering feels slightly light at highway speeds, it contributes to the impressive 36.4-foot turning radius (31.5 feet for RWD models), making U-turns a breeze. Overall, the ID4 AWD offers easy and enjoyable driving dynamics, although it isn’t intended to be a sporty crossover.

Standard safety features on the ID4 AWD include ABS, power-assisted front vented and rear solid disc brakes. Driving confidence and handling are further bolstered by electronic stability control, electronic brake-pressure distribution, and brake assist.

Stylish and timeless German design

European-Influenced Design

There exist subtle differences on the outside between the various models, with the AWD emblem on the front fenders serving as the distinguishing factor between the ID4 RWD and AWD variants. For those with a keen eye, there is a 0.7-inch increase in ground clearance on the ID4 AWD Pro.

Both exhibit a timeless German style featuring sleek LED projector headlights situated at the ends of the outer fenders, which are bridged by a signature LED light bar intersected by the illuminated VW logo. The lower front fascia’s faux grille sports a diamond pattern, designed by Volkswagen to enhance airflow and aerodynamics, resulting in an impressive 0.28 drag coefficient.

Compared to its rivals, the ID4 boasts a brief hood without a front trunk (frunk). The rear power hatch contains LED taillights connected by another light bar, adding a sharp appearance that comes standard on the S models.

Comfort and Technology

The interior of the ID4 AWD Pro S is spacious, contemporary, futuristic, and arguably minimalist. A bright cabin is facilitated by expansive windows and a panoramic glass sunroof with a power-operated sunshade.

Spacious cargo area

The seats are upholstered in V-Tex leatherette, a synthetic leather that offers a softer, warmer, and more durable alternative to traditional leather. The front seats, both heated and ventilated, feature 12-way power adjustments including 4-way lumbar support, massage functions, and memory settings. The second row can easily accommodate two adults, and at a stretch, three occupants, with the outer rear seats boasting heating elements and two convenient USB charge-only ports.

Cargo space is ample, providing 30.3 cubic feet of capacity with the 60:40 split-folding rear seat in its upright position, which expands to 64.2 cubic feet by folding the rear seat flat. For additional storage options, the rear floor in the cargo area can be removed to reveal a compartment suitable for storing, among other items, the charging cord.

In contrast to traditional engine start-stop procedures, the electric ID4 is powered up and down akin to a computer. Positioned in the driver’s seat prompts the partial activation of the dashboard, with full display activation accomplished by pressing the brake pedal. To initiate driving, simply move the right stalk upward for D (drive) or B (brake) for forward movement, or pull the stalk back for R (reverse). Upon completion of the journey, pressing the button on the stalk endpoint for P (park) activates the parking brake, followed by disembarking to power down the ID4.

Audio and Information

Equipped with a 5.3-inch driver digital display, the 2024 ID4 showcases information on the battery charge status, driving range, navigation, and driving data. Positioned on the steering column rather than integrated into the dashboard, this placement ensures essential information is within the driver’s direct line of sight, eliminating the necessity for a head-up display.

An intelligently designed dashboard

Featuring a 12.9-inch color infotainment screen as standard on the 82 kWh models, the operating system has seen notable enhancements since our last assessment of the 2023 ID4. However, some users may find certain haptic controls frustrating, and it is peculiar that artist information is not displayed when selecting a preset radio station, requiring an additional tap on the screen. The 62 kWh battery models come standard with a 12.0-inch infotainment screen.

The 7-speaker audio system includes FM/HD radio, SiriusXM (90-day trial), and voice control, though lacks AM radio compatibility. The App-Connect feature allows for seamless smartphone integration and facilitates control of numerous functions on the ID.4, such as navigating around traffic congestion, pre-heating the cabin, listening to podcasts, and accessing internet radio stations.

Pre-defined voice commands are available; initiating with “Hello, ID” and setting up custom commands through the Settings menu is feasible.

Further enhancing convenience, the ID4 offers 30-color ambient lighting, a multifunction heated steering wheel wrapped in leather, USB-C data ports in the front row, dual-zone automatic climate control with air filtration, a fixed glass moonroof, and a well-illuminated carpeted cargo area with a 12-volt outlet.

IQ.Drive even enables short periods of hands-free driving, providing a glimpse of the future of automobile automation.
