- Rivian has launched a significant new software update this week.
- This update features tri-zone climate control and exciting new animations for the vehicle’s drive settings.
- Additionally, Rivian owners can now access a live feed of their vehicle’s surroundings through the Rivian app.
One of the downsides of the new wave of “software-defined vehicles” is that manufacturers often promise updates that don’t materialize, as seen with Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” system and the underwhelming Fisker Ocean. However, it is refreshing to see owners of certain models actually receiving valuable new functionalities over time.
Rivian recently began rolling out an update on Wednesday, packed with noteworthy enhancements that users should be aware of.
Gear Guard Live Cam
Rivian’s Gear Guard is a camera-based security feature, akin to Tesla’s Sentry Mode. It actively watches the surroundings of the vehicle and records footage if it detects any unusual activity.
With the new update, Rivian owners can now view a live feed of their vehicle’s surroundings through the Rivian mobile app. Here’s how it appears in the app:
According to Rivian, this feature has been one of the most requested by owners. It’s easy to understand why. Whether you’re concerned about leaving your vehicle in an unfamiliar area or want to check if a delivery has arrived, this functionality provides peace of mind.
Drive Mode Animations
Rivian vehicles are already known for their visually appealing graphics that indicate the current drive mode. For instance, switching to snow mode transforms the display to show the vehicle navigating a snowy road, while sport mode garners a racing track background. These animations add a fun element to the driving experience.
In the latest update, Rivian has introduced new animations designed to better illustrate the functionality of different settings. For example, changing the ride height with Rivian’s adjustable air suspension now features an animation demonstrating the new ground clearance and overall height of the vehicle.
Similar animations have also been added for regenerative braking, ride comfort, and stability control settings.
Dynamic Headlamp Leveling
The R1S SUV and R1T truck from Rivian are equipped with cutting-edge adaptive driving beam technology, a recent addition to the U.S. automotive market. These headlights can dim areas of their beam when they detect oncoming traffic.
With this update, they can also provide a dynamic headlamp leveling feature that “ensures a stable light diffusion from the vehicle’s headlights regardless of its position.” This enhancement allows drivers to see ahead clearly in low visibility conditions, even on uneven terrain or during sudden acceleration or braking.
Tri-Zone Climate Control
Lastly, Rivian has added tri-zone climate control, enabling the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers to select their own individual temperature preferences. Previously, only the front occupants had this ability. Additionally, those sitting in the second row can now adjust their temperature using the touchscreen located in the back.
What feature from this update excites you the most? Are there any additional features you think Rivian should implement next? Share your thoughts in the comments.
