  • The Rivian Huge+ battery is essentially an Ultimate Pack that’s locked by software
  • The Huge+ is not an officially listed choice; Rivian is contacting Huge Pack purchasers and providing it as an alternative
  • Rivian might enable additional battery capacity in the Huge+ later for a charge

Several buyers selecting an updated 2025 Rivian R1T or R1S with a Huge battery are being proposed a larger, more costly Ultimate battery that’s software-constrained to match the specifications of the Huge battery.

The details were initially disclosed on Aug. 2 by RivianTrackr and subsequently verified by a company representative to Motor Authority.

The 109.4-kwh Huge battery is exclusively offered on models equipped with a Dual-Motor powertrain, and as per Rivian, the demand for this setup was so substantial that the company initiated offering certain buyers a 141.5-kwh Ultimate battery that adjusts its capacity and range via software to match the Huge battery.

The motive? To hasten production and deliver vehicles to owners sooner. This is a strategy Tesla has also employed in the past with the Model S.

Rivian terms the software-constrained battery as a Huge+ battery and stated that there are no variances in performance between vehicles with the Huge battery and those with the Huge+ battery. In the 2025 R1T with the Dual-Motor powertrain, the Huge battery provides an approximated 330 miles range, and the Ultimate battery extends it to 420 miles. The corresponding figures for the 2025 R1S are 330 miles and 410 miles.

There’s no choice to request a Huge+ battery. Rivian is making the choice to offer it based on existing Huge battery orders and production timetables.

When asked if Rivian will present the option for owners of vehicles with the Huge+ battery to pay a fee in the future and unlock the extra capacity, the representative mentioned that the company is considering methods to provide additional range for the Huge+ battery but currently has no announcements to make.

There may be an additional advantage with the Huge+ battery, one that won’t incur an additional cost. Rivian suggests that its batteries should only be charged to 70% for daily use, 85% for occasional extended drives, and 100% for road trips to enhance their lifespan. However, as per RivianTrackr’s sources, the Huge+ battery can safely be charged to 100% daily as this merely amounts to around 75-80% of its actual capacity.

When inquired about charging the Huge+ battery to 100% daily, the Rivian spokesperson mentioned that the company recommends the same charging guidelines for the Huge+ battery as it does for the Huge battery.

The updates to the 2025 R1T and R1S are significantly more comprehensive than a standard mid-cycle refresh. Even though the exteriors and interiors remain unchanged, Rivian mentioned that it completely revamped the electronic and software systems of the vehicles. This led to the elimination of 1.6 miles of wiring and the reduction of individual ECUs from 17 to seven. Rivian has also integrated its collection of electronic driver-assist features, known as the Rivian Autonomy Platform. Additionally, a new Quad-Motor powertrain now enhances power to 1,025 hp.
