After committing $500 million to Rivian, Ford hinted at joint efforts to develop an electric pickup truck and SUV. Recent speculations suggest a Rivian-based electric Lincoln SUV might be on the horizon, following months of secretive collaboration.
According to a Ford supplier’s employee, Reuters suggests that the upcoming model will be an electric SUV utilizing Rivian’s innovative “skateboard” platform. This design conceals batteries in the floor, preserving interior space. The new SUV is anticipated to launch in mid-2022, following the debut of Lincoln’s initial electric vehicle next year, a compact crossover inspired by the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Lincoln aims to expand its lineup of electric vehicles by introducing a midsize model in 2023. It remains uncertain if these electric models will coexist alongside Lincoln’s current internal combustion vehicles, many of which are relatively new. However, some may be due for replacement upon the arrival of their electric counterparts.
Upon reaching out, a Lincoln representative chose not to respond to Reuters‘ article.
The electric luxury SUV market is set to intensify over the next few years. Rivian’s R1S plans an early 2021 debut, outrunning General Motors’ speculated offering. Following suit, Lincoln, with its Rivian ties, will unveil a major electric vehicle in 2022, while Cadillac plans its electric response by 2023.
