It seems that the concept of van life may be getting a bit smaller. At a recent dealer meeting, Ford representatives unveiled a prototype of a new van intended to take the place of the discontinued Transit Connect. This compact model is expected to be based on the Maverick and could make its official debut as early as next year.

As reported by Ford Authority, this prototype van has yet to receive an official name, no specific timeline for production has been established, and its place of manufacture is still unknown. The previous version of the Transit Connect was imported from Spain; however, Ford planned to manufacture the new van at its Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico, utilizing the same platform as the Bronco Sport and Maverick, which are also produced there. The van, however, was removed from the lineup—prompting speculation about whether this could be a change of heart.

Vans, similar to wagons, often struggle to gain popularity among Americans. Despite their practical features and functionality, many view them as lacking size, height, and style, limiting their appeal mostly to fleet usage. As an owner of a hatch-wagon and former beach van shuttler, I find this trend disheartening. So what could have influenced Ford’s apparent shift in focus?

In 2023, sales of the Bronco Sport and Maverick were strong, increasing year-over-year by 28.1% and 26.5%, respectively. These positive trends have continued into the current year. While details regarding the potential engine options for this new compact van remain unclear, it’s possible it could feature a hybrid powertrain, similar to the Maverick, potentially making it more appealing to consumers. Although it may not be compact like Japan’s kei vans, it could still receive a sporty touch akin to the Maverick Lobo, making it a suitable choice for car enthusiasts.

For now, news about the Maverick-based compact van remains speculative without any visual confirmation. What are your thoughts on this mysterious vehicle? If Ford decides to produce it, would you consider purchasing one?
