The C8 Corvette boasts various impressive features, but its ergonomic layout may require some adjustment. The cabin is characterized by a prominent central tunnel extending towards the dashboard, topped by a lengthy series of controls known as the “panel of switches.” For individuals unfamiliar with it, navigation can be perplexing—especially for passengers. Additionally, it accentuates the already snug interior of the mid-engined Corvette, making it appear more enclosed. There have been persistent rumors about its removal over the past few years, and now a recent report from CorvetteBlogger suggests imminent changes.
According to the information obtained, discussions among several General Motors engineers at the Carlisle event in Pennsylvania in late August indicated that the design was on its way out. The potential adjustment to the interior of the car has been speculated about since 2021, with an estimated target year of 2025—most likely tied to the 2025 model.
The usability of the current layout may be subject to debate. However, what is indisputable is that the C8 Corvette’s interior lacks the spaciousness of its predecessor, and there are valid reasons for this. The central tunnel is taller, eliminating access from the passenger area to the rear storage section. Consequently, the interior feels less open and airy.
The presence of the “array” exacerbates this issue slightly. It raises the height of the central tunnel, introduces a bulkier divider between the driver and passenger, and fails to clearly indicate the owner of each set of controls. Ergonomically speaking, organizing the driver’s controls on the driver’s side, and likewise for the passenger, simply makes more sense.
Allegedly, GM’s design chief Michael Simcoe is not in favor of the control panel and has purportedly been advocating for its revision. The specific details regarding the alterations needed to accommodate the new design remain elusive. This is currently speculative, so no specifics on the supposed redesign have been disclosed. The first clues about the modifications are expected to surface upon the introduction of the 2025 models for covert testing, prompting spy photographers to spring into action.
