Since its groundbreaking performance with the Veyron in 2005, Bugatti has been synonymous with its engine—a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16. However, according to a report by Autocar, the year 2027 will mark a significant change as Bugatti transitions to a hybrid powertrain featuring a smaller engine.

Although details about the new engine and hybrid setup are closely guarded, Bugatti’s design team has hinted at the design differences for the upcoming car. “It presents new possibilities,” shared Bugatti’s design director Achim Anscheidt with Autocar. “There are options to enhance the agility of Bugatti’s future design without compromising its inherent grandeur and authority.”

The anticipated more dynamic design mentioned by Anscheidt is likely made achievable by downsizing the engine. The current 8.0-liter W16 engine is enormous, and its integration into the existing Chiron is a feat of design and engineering. While the new engine might still retain the W16 configuration, its displacement will be reduced. And with electric motors assisting in power delivery, it may not require the same level of robustness as the current W16 according to reports.

While specific details about the new engine were not disclosed by Bugatti, deputy design director Frank Heyl expressed great anticipation for the upcoming hybrid model. “It’s going to be a remarkable blend of proportions, technology, innovation, and surprise. The level of excitement it will generate will be unprecedented, and it’s a genuine pleasure to be involved in this project,” he shared with Autocar.

It is expected that Bugatti’s next release will surpass the Chiron in terms of speed, precision, stability, and luxury. Nevertheless, the departure of the last high-displacement engine from the market will leave a void. Following the discontinuation of the SRT Viper, Bugatti stood as the last advocate of the high-displacement performance philosophy. The W16 epitomized an extravagantly engineered tribute to excess, a sentiment that resonated especially in today’s era dominated by downsized engines and electric vehicles. While there may no longer be a place for the Bugatti W16 in the modern automotive landscape, its impending absence is one that will be felt and appreciated.
