BMW XM’s Future Uncertain as Production Ends in 2028
The BMW XM, a super SUV introduced just over a year ago, appears to be on the path to an early retirement. Upon its launch, BMW celebrated the XM’s distinction as the only vehicle, apart from the iconic M1, fully developed by its M Division. However, despite its impressive M badge, reports suggest that production of the V8 plug-in hybrid will cease in 2028, with no plans for a successor, as indicated by Automotive News.
Initially, BMW had intended to launch a new XM model that would replace its hybrid engine with an all-electric powertrain. The XM features a powerful setup that combines a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor integrated into its eight-speed automatic transmission, generating 738 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque in the top-tier XM Label Red. The standard XM model also showcases robust performance, producing 644 horsepower and 590 lb-ft with its V8 and hybrid system. The vehicle comes equipped with a 25.7-kWh battery pack, offering an electric range of approximately 30 miles, allowing BMW to mark the PHEV version as a key model in its electrified lineup.
Plans for the all-electric successor, known by the codename G79, were set for production to start in late 2028 at BMW’s facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina. However, recent analyses suggest that these intentions are now being retracted, with the XM production scheduled to conclude entirely instead of moving forward with the new electric variant.
The short-lived XM model, which arrived at dealerships last year, is facing its decline amid uncertainties about its market positioning. With a starting price of $159,000 for the base model and $185,000 for the performance-oriented XM Label, the XM raises questions about its justification as either a high-performance SUV or a luxury PHEV—or even if it fulfills neither role successfully. Additionally, its controversial design has sparked mixed opinions, challenging its appeal despite its remarkable speed capabilities, which include a 0-60 mph time as quick as 3.7 seconds.
BMW’s Clarification on Future Models
In a statement released on June 26, 2024, BMW clarified its stance regarding future product developments and the XM’s status. A spokesperson confirmed that, as company policy, they do not comment on speculative reports about upcoming models. However, they felt it necessary to address recent rumors regarding the reintroduction of the BMW 6 Series, confirming there are no plans for a 2026 model. Furthermore, the company has not made any official announcements regarding the future of the BMW XM, indicating that uncertainty looms over its existence in the market.
