This week at the 2024 Paris auto show, Renault unveiled the all-new 4 E-Tech electric subcompact crossover.
The 4 E-Tech is positioned as a spiritual successor to the beloved Renault 4. Earlier this year, the automaker also introduced the modern 5 electric hatchback, another nostalgic model from its lineup that has been reimagined for the electric age.
First launched in 1961, the original Renault 4, often referred to as the 4L, was produced for over three decades and came in multiple body styles, predominantly as a four-door hatchback. In contrast, the new 4 E-Tech will exclusively be available as a crossover.
Measuring 163 inches in length—about 11 inches shorter than the latest Mini Countryman—the 4 E-Tech can comfortably accommodate five passengers and offers nearly 15 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear. The dashboard is equipped with two digital displays that function as the gauge cluster and infotainment center, featuring an integrated Google-based system complete with a voice assistant.

The 4 E-Tech is built on the CMF-B EV platform, shared with the 5 E-Tech and developed by the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance. However, this iteration of the platform is a distinct, cost-effective design that Renault has labeled the AmpR Small.
Renault will provide customers with a choice of 40 kWh and 52 kWh battery options for the 4 E-Tech. The larger battery powers a front-mounted electric motor that delivers a peak output of 148 horsepower, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 8.5 seconds. The smaller battery is paired with a front-mounted motor producing 121 horsepower.
Both battery options are compatible with DC fast charging, enabling the batteries to be charged from 15% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. With the larger battery, Renault estimates a driving range of around 250 miles according to the WLTP testing cycle used in Europe, though a lower mileage is expected when evaluated under the more stringent EPA cycle. The vehicle also supports bidirectional charging and one-pedal driving.
Sales of the 4 E-Tech and the 5 E-Tech are set to begin next year in markets where Renault has a presence. Dealerships are already accepting reservations for customers who wish to secure an early production slot.
