The 2017 Honda Civic Type-R is one of the most anticipated car releases of the year. Featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, the Civic Type-R drives its power through the front wheels. It achieved an impressive Nurburgring lap time of 7:43.8, setting a record for front-wheel drive production vehicles. Notably, this model marks the first time Honda has sold a vehicle with the iconic Type-R badge in the United States. Recently, the auction for the first production Civic Type-R, designated as 00001, concluded—fetching an astounding $200,000.

Some may question, “Who in their right mind would spend supercar money on a Honda Civic?” The answer lies in the nature of the auction—it was for charity, resulting in bids that reflect goodwill. Organized by Bring A Trailer, Honda, and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, the charity auction saw Bring A Trailer waive their usual five percent commission from the sale to ensure all proceeds go to charity. The winner of the auction will even have the vehicle delivered to their closest Honda dealer, courtesy of Honda.

There are concerns that this vehicle might end up as a display piece, a fate that often befalls high-priced cars. However, it’s highly unlikely that any Civic Type-R, regardless of its serial number, will hold a value anywhere near $200,000 in the future. Therefore, this car is meant to be driven, as every car should be. After all, cars should not be viewed merely as investments—just ask Porsche.

For those of us who can’t afford this six-figure Civic Type-R, there’s no need for disappointment; we can still admire its performance through the Nurburgring lap video.
