Starting in 2025, Toyota will introduce an automatic transmission option for customers of the GR Corolla. However, this choice may not align with what some car enthusiasts anticipated. Instead of a dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which is known for its quick gear changes, the GR Corolla will feature a torque-converter eight-speed automatic, referred to as a DAT (Direct Automatic Transmission). This decision raises questions about why Toyota opted for a conventional automatic in its sporty hatchback.
GR Corolla Chief Engineer Naoyuki Sakamoto explained to The Drive, “Initially, when considering the power and performance from a standstill, the torque converter performs quite well. It also handles serious driving scenarios with varying speed conditions effectively.”
He continued, “Once the car is in motion and the lockup engages, the torque converter no longer slips. At that point, the difference between a DCT and an automatic transmission is negligible. Both systems involve changing gears in a similar manner, so we chose to stick with the automatic transmission without needing to incorporate a dual-clutch system.”
According to Toyota, the advantages of switching to a more intricate and costly DCT were minimal in terms of performance. While acknowledging the benefits of DCTs, it seems they did not provide sufficient incentive for the transition.
Sakamoto remarked, “Certainly, there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems. There are situations where a DCT outperforms an automatic transmission and vice versa. However, our long history of enhancing automatic transmissions has led us to focus on that technology. We aim to leverage our expertise in this area, even though DCTs may be lighter.” He noted that advancements in automatic transmission technology have been significantly influenced by their involvement in motorsports.
While a DCT might offer a more thrilling experience with quicker shifts, Toyota’s DAT is still designed to outperform human drivers in terms of speed. Additionally, automatic GR Corolla drivers can benefit from two extra gears, improving highway cruising efficiency and providing a quieter ride overall.
