“The decision for Acura not joining BMW, Cadillac, and Porsche at Le Mans is quite simple,” mentioned Dave Salters, the president of Honda Performance Development during a conversation with The Drive at the Rolex 24. “Our focus is on the U.S. We need to establish our foundation here first, as this is our primary racing domain. Moreover, this choice ultimately lies with Honda. They need to assess its viability and align the strategies with the relevant markets such as the U.S. and Europe.”
“These individuals excel in Formula 1 racing, showcasing their expertise in brand promotion,” Salters emphasized.
Should Meyer Shank or Wayne Taylor opt to participate in the Le Mans event (expressing their willingness here), Honda Japan would need to provide approval for a privateer team to compete under the Honda (or potentially Acura) banner with factory support. The logistics are intricate.
“We are eager to participate if the green light is given, but it is essential for Honda, HPD, and Acura to be aligned in this decision-making process. Only then will we proceed,” Mike Shank, the co-owner of MSR, mentioned to The Drive.
When asked about his push for Honda’s approval, Shank replied: “I’m letting them know that we are ready and willing to participate. However, the initiation must come from Honda, and the ACO mandates a specific process that needs to be followed. The first step lies with the primary authority.”
Expectedly, Acura racing drivers are enthusiastic about the prospect of joining Le Mans with the new ARX-06, as both Castroneves and Pagenaud have expressed their eagerness. While drivers retain the freedom to explore opportunities beyond their contractual IMSA obligations, it’s evident that the Indy 500 and Rolex 24 champions are keen on doing so in collaboration with Honda.
“We are open to the possibilities, waiting for the opportune moment,” Castroneves shared with The Drive at the Rolex 24.”I really hoped Acura would make an appearance at Le Mans this year, unfortunately, they have decided not to go.
“The endurance race at Le Mans is a longstanding event. When Acura eventually commits to participating, they are determined to emerge victorious, not just as mere participants. I am enthusiastic about it. If they were to inquire, I would enthusiastically endorse the idea of going! I have had conversations with them,” Castroneves expressed.
“I am all set to venture into it,” Pagenaud shared with The Drive just moments before the start of Rolex 24. “Our ultimate goal is to clinch victory; hence, we are diligently observing this year’s competition to extract valuable insights.”
Upon consultation with HPD, team proprietors, and racing enthusiasts, it became apparent that while everyone yearns to compete at Circuit de la Sarthe, they collectively concurred that Honda’s decision to observe and evaluate the competition dynamics in 2023 was prudent. This strategy will undoubtedly enhance their preparedness for a potential entry in 2024.
“It is imperative for Honda to acquire insights about our rivals, particularly in LMH and LMDh, ensuring fair competition. Subsequently, a well-thought-out decision will be made, one that rests solely with Honda,” Salters reiterated. “The collaboration between HPD and HRC is formidable; their acumen in motorsport is profound, and they are meticulously assessing the unfolding scenario. Honda is vigilantly monitoring, learning from the pros and cons of the current landscape.”
When asked about his thoughts on competitors participating in Le Mans while Acura refrains this year, Salters responded, “Would we like to participate? Absolutely. Yet, pragmatism dictates otherwise. Our focus in the U.S. demands our attention—conquering Porsche, BMW in IMSA is crucial. These are revered brands that we seek to surpass. It makes strategic sense to pause momentarily and decide thoughtfully later. Honda aims for balanced competition between LMH and LMDh before venturing into racing.”
Castroneves concurred, “The factory’s strategy is well-calculated. They comprehend their rivals and aim to learn from them.”
For Mike Shank, the significance of the opportunity is not lost on him. A potential journey to Le Mans could elevate his team to unprecedented heights, potentially becoming the sole victors of Indy 500, Rolex 24, and Le Mans outright.
“Chip Ganassi’s achievement—in its class, is remarkable. However, clinching an overall win? To my knowledge, that remains unattained. That unlocks a whole different narrative. Our aspiration is certainly set in that direction,” Shank elaborated.
