During the current week, Tesla introduced in-house wraps for its Model 3 and Model Y. A clear wrap for paint protection is priced at $5,000, while a monochrome-colored wrap (such as Satin Ceramic White, Satin Stealth Black, or Slip Gray) costs $7,500, and an actual color wrap (Crimson Red, Glacier Blue, Forest Green, or Satin Rose Gold) comes at $8,000. Upon the release of this news, there was a bit of surprise regarding the pricing—but as it turns out, Tesla’s wrap costs are actually quite reasonable.
According to Electrek, Tesla is utilizing paint protection film (PPF) instead of vinyl, which is thicker and designed to last for several years, making it a bit more expensive. To understand how Tesla’s pricing stacks up against other options, I contacted two independent wrap shops in California—Sticker City in Sherman Oaks and Exotic Car Wraps in Los Angeles— for quotes on full-car PPF wraps. Surprisingly, the prices were quite comparable to what Tesla is offering.
Formerly, Sticker City offered color wraps, quoting us $5,000 for a basic-colored vinyl when they did. Chrome, satin, or any special color cost between $8,000 and $9,000. Interestingly, a clear PPF wrap cost $6,400—$1,400 more than Tesla’s pricing. On the other hand, Exotic Car Wraps quoted ” $5,500 to $6,500″ for a clear PPF. Upon informing the representative about Tesla’s color film pricing, he mentioned that they essentially charge the same amount.
Currently, two Tesla service centers in West Covina and Carlsbad are offering Tesla-approved wraps, with more expected to join if the demand escalates. The convenience of wrapping your Tesla without having to visit a third-party shop is appealing if you were planning to get it wrapped anyway; although don’t anticipate grabbing a bargain through this route. On a positive note, you’re also not being taken advantage of.
