A US-based maker of electronic parts, Power Integrations, has agreed to acquire the assets of Odyssey Semiconductor Technologies, a creator of vertical gallium-nitride (GaN) transistor technology.

The deal is set to be finalized in July 2024, following which all crucial Odyssey staff members are set to become part of Power Integrations’ technology team.

The acquisition bolsters Power Integrations’ advancement of its PowiGaN technology, which is integrated into the firm’s items such as InnoSwitch ICs, HiperPFS-5 power-factor-correction ICs, and its recently introduced InnoMux-2 series of single-stage, multiple-output ICs. The enterprise brought out 900 V and 1,250 V variants of PowiGaN technology and products in 2023.

“We are executing a strategy focused on progressing towards cost equality with silicon MOSFETs and broadening the voltage and power capabilities of PowiGaN. Our aim is to market a cost-efficient high-current and high-voltage GaN technology to serve higher-power applications that are presently catered to by silicon carbide (SiC), at a considerably reduced cost and improved performance made possible by the inherent material benefits of GaN over SiC.”
