BMW has a tradition of revealing concept vehicles at Villa d’Este, and this year is no exception. The Skytop Concept, a roofless two-seater coupe inspired by classic BMW models, has been unveiled by the German automaker. Head of BMW Group Design, Adrian van Hooydonk, describes the BMW Concept Skytop as a distinctive and unconventional design, following in the footsteps of Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. It combines the agility of driving and the sophistication of the BMW Z8 and BMW 503.
The Skytop Concept displays design elements reminiscent of the Z8 roadster, with its sleek taillights and sharknose front end paying homage to early 2000s roadsters. The sculpted hood, compact headlights, and distinct flat-decked rear end evoke the style of the 503 from the late 1950s.
Under the bonnet lies the 617-horsepower 4.4-litre V-8 from the M8 Competition. It seems BMW has utilized an M8 as the base and reshaped its contours to craft the Skytop. The interior continues with a familiar production car theme, displaying a dashboard reminiscent of the 8-Series, with a digital gauge cluster, infotainment screen, center stack, and gear shifter.
The cabin highlights leather-upholstered seats and a stylish steering wheel, bearing a resemblance to production models. The custom roll bar situated behind the seats includes a retractable window operated by power. The roof, made of two pieces, can be manually detached and stored in the trunk.
Despite its production-ready aesthetics, it is improbable that the Skytop will enter mass production. BMW already offers the 8 Series coupe and convertible, rendering a targa variation unnecessary. Nevertheless, its remarkable design sets it apart as a noteworthy concept.
