Witnessing a vehicle traverse water is always fascinating; it’s truly astonishing to see it resist floating away. Moving through three feet of water is one scenario, and maneuvering through water deeper than the height of your vehicle is an entirely different challenge, which is why I’m captivated by this footage of an ancient Ranger Rover accomplishing just that.
This scene unfolds in a video shared on Instagram, showcasing what seems to be a later model five-door Range Rover Classic equipped with a snorkel so tall that it likely breaches multiple FAA regulations. The purpose of this elevated snorkel becomes evident when its driver fearlessly plunges into the body of water, clearly prioritizing reaching the other side over having a damp seat.
The SUV bubbles through the water, somehow maintaining momentum as its engine and other vital components become immersed. Without a periscope—definitely a must-have—the driver partially emerges through the window at one point, likely to ensure they’re still on course. Subsequently, the Rover ascends the opposite bank, exuding water triumphantly, and crucially, still operational.
Instances like these typically demand thorough preparation to ensure the vehicle functions underwater, with the snorkel being just one visible aspect. Electrical connections must be waterproofed, breathers must not face upwards, and any slight vacuum leak is unacceptable to prevent water ingestion by the engine. Such concerns will diminish with the rise of electric drivetrains in off-road SUVs, but amphibious electric SUVs, notably Jeeps, won’t materialize until at least the 2030s. In essence, it’s wise to bring a life jacket and brush up on your breaststroke skills.
