At times, unexpectedly, it may seem as if your wishes have been heard. If given the option, I might have requested a higher authority than Nissan to answer mine, and a more significant aspiration fulfilled than a modern Sentra SE-R Spec V. Nevertheless, I won’t scrutinize a present opportunity, because Nissan’s Sentra DET Concept set for SEMA is the closest glimpse we may have of a new Spec V. Or is it?
To me, the Sentra DET emerges as the most thrilling among the trio of concepts exhibited by the automaker at this year’s show, in addition to its lifted Rugged Rogue and Forsberg Racing-inspired Frontier. The DET designation pays homage to Nissan’s renowned turbo engines, where the initials symbolize DOHC-EFI-turbo. Just like the SR20DET, the RB26DETT, and the VR38DETT, and so forth. It clearly signifies what lies beneath the hood.

In the United States, the sole power unit accessible for the Sentra is a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated with a CVT. However, in the DET variant, the gearbox has been replaced with the Canadian market’s six-speed manual, supplemented by a Quaife LSD. This adaptation was essential due to—indeed, I’m approaching that point—the substantial Garrett turbo attached to the side of the four-cylinder powerplant.
Nissan has affixed a G25-660 turbo and all the required supporting enhancements, ranging from enhanced fuel delivery to a radiator, hood vents, intercooler, standalone ECU, and a sturdier bottom end to unify it all. It incorporates Eagle rods and Manley pistons (both likely forged) that were micro shot-peened for reinforced durability and potency. The exact output remains undisclosed by Nissan, but it is evidently adequate to necessitate additional performance components to leverage its capabilities.
The Sentra DET benefits from prototype Nismo coilovers, sway bars, and a catback exhaust, some of which were fine-tuned with input from GT4 racer (and GT Academy graduate) Bryan Heitkotter. It gains larger brakes sourced from the Z featuring lightweight rotors, and 18-inch Nismo LM wheels wrapped in expanded 245-section tires. Finishing touches include Nismo carbon mirror caps, and front Recaro bucket seats.
This transformation undeniably elevates the torque vectoring-enabled Sentra above competitors like the Honda Civic Si, possibly edging closer to the Hyundai Elantra N’s caliber. It represents a significant alteration for a vehicle that is initially intended as a display piece. While SEMA builds often push boundaries, Nissan has demonstrated its proficiency in retaining the essence of that mystical SE-R Spec V formula. All that remains is for Nissan to prepare enough to share with enthusiasts.
