Over the years, Subaru’s design choices have faced significant criticism. However, the automaker is making strides to improve its image, as evidenced by the recent unveiling of the VIZIV Performance Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, which hints at the future of Subaru’s design philosophy.
The VIZIV, which Subaru describes as “Vision for Innovation,” appears to be a bold take on the current WRX model. The design prominently features trapezoidal shapes, especially evident in the front grilles. Even the traditional hood scoop has been reimagined as a trapezoid, which may lack aerodynamic efficiency but succeeds in an aesthetic sense—appropriate for a concept vehicle. The hood itself is trapezoidal, tapering toward the front to make the fender flares more pronounced. The familiar C-light design is maintained, housing a couple of small lights, likely LED. Though this design might not meet U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, it’s important to remember that concept cars are not bound by these standards.
The wheel arches also sport a trapezoidal shape, reminiscent more of an XJ Jeep Cherokee than a Subaru. The design of the current WRX has become smoother over time, although its original contours remain distinct.
Similarly, the rear lights have undergone a transformation, now linked by a red strip across the trunk lid. The rear diffuser has been made larger, and the usual quad tailpipes now sit at an angle rather than running straight across. The rear fog light has also grown in size, now taking on a hexagonal shape formed by two trapezoids, moving away from the traditional square design.
It’s essential to remember that a concept car is precisely that—a concept, rather than a snapshot of a production model. The Subaru WRX Concept from 2013, for instance, presented a sleek four-door coupe that differed substantially from the 2015 WRX in reality. Nonetheless, it did feature many new design elements that later appeared on the actual WRX in a more subdued manner. While we may not see a new WRX until at least 2020, it’s likely that some design cues from the VIZIV will be incorporated into future WRX models and other vehicles from Subaru.
