However, real developments are taking place 2,000 miles away in sunny Southern California, where a small convoy of Jeep Wrangler pickup truck test vehicles was spotted taking a break for lunch on Tuesday. This unexpected encounter revealed an intriguing detail: it seems the pickup version may also feature a foldable windshield.
The much-anticipated truck has been the subject of numerous rumors and unverified reports, including speculation regarding its potential name, Scrambler, and the possibility of a convertible model. With Fiat-Chrysler tightening controls on leaks, we have relied on spy photos taken during real-world testing of Wrangler pickup prototypes. Our opportunity to observe one up close occurred in a Burger King parking lot in Santa Monica, California.
During our observation of the pickup Wranglers on Tuesday, we noticed them pull into the parking lot where the drivers exited the vehicles. One driver quickly covered their truck with a tarp while the other simply walked away. This allowed us an unplanned photo opportunity at the fast-food restaurant.
The vehicle’s design is unmistakable, maintaining the four-door JL Wrangler look with a truck bed. From the front cab to the back, it mirrors the SUV’s appearance, complete with the new fender-mounted turn signals and LED headlights. Notably, it appears to retain the same windshield design as the new model, which suggests it should fold down. Although much of the area beneath the windshield was shielded with padding, one corner revealed a seam indicative of a foldable feature. Additionally, two suspicious bulges under the camouflage suggested the presence of hinges.
A spokesperson for Fiat-Chrysler refrained from commenting, citing company policy on discussing future products.
The shared framework between the Wrangler and the pickup results in similar dimensions, making the new truck over five inches narrower than the Ram 1500. However, a suspension design located beneath the pickup bed seems tailored to stabilize loads and draws inspiration from its automotive family.
Previous reports indicated the Wrangler pickup’s frame could measure 205 inches, resulting in an overall length of approximately 215-220 inches. This length is over two feet longer than the four-door Wrangler SUV and nearly comparable to full-size pickups. In person, the truck does appear somewhat lengthy; its narrower width and extended rear overhang contribute to this perception, though it is not excessively long.
Inside, the test mule features a makeshift interior, utilizing components from the older JK Wrangler and a simple textile bench in the second row. However, it is encouraging to see traditional elements like the old school transfer case lever, hinting that Jeep may be experimenting with the four-wheel-drive system in varying terrains. The finished interior is expected to resemble that of the new Wrangler SUV.
Overall, Fiat-Chrysler appears to recognize that a Jeep Wrangler pickup must retain its heritage to capture both loyal fans and new customers. The result is a vehicle that seems to embody enough quintessential Jeep characteristics to attract a wide audience.
