Surprisingly, the latest BMW M2 has proven its speed on the track. The G87 model has just set a new record in the compact car class at the renowned Nürburgring, outperforming competitors like the Audi RS3 and the previous M2 with an impressive time of 7:38.706. While it may not be an all-time track record, it’s certainly a remarkable feat.

The automaker released a video showcasing the entire lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the iconic road course, as opposed to the more modern GP circuit used for recent Formula 1 races. The M2’s time not only surpasses its rivals but also beats the previous M2 model. The older F87 M2 Competition, not even the base version, clocked in at 7:52.36. However, BMW’s lead over the previous record holder, Audi, is not extensive. In 2021, an RS3 in the same category completed the track in 7:40.748. A gap of just two seconds is nearly within the margin of error on the track.

In contrast to Audi’s approach, BMW achieved the record with components that are readily available to regular customers, as per the manufacturer. Audi’s RS3, on the other hand, was extensively modified with a roll cage, rear seat removal, and racing seats, as highlighted by Bridge to Gantry. There’s a possibility that Audi could respond with a special edition RS3 to reclaim the throne, despite the exorbitant costs involved in this seemingly trivial competition, a trait commonly associated with German automakers.

Although the new M2 boasts an impressive record, it differs from its predecessor. The current “compact” 2 Series resembles a shortened 4 Series and weighs close to 4,000 pounds as a consequence. Its saving grace is the potent six-cylinder engine delivering 453 horsepower and an optional manual transmission, yet it falls short of providing a truly fitting swan song. Nonetheless, as a manual, rear-wheel drive coupe in an era where such models are becoming scarce, it remains a compelling choice, especially due to its affordability, priced around $15,000 less than an M4.
