Fiat Chrysler Automobiles disclosed its July sales report for the Canadian market at the beginning of this month, revealing that the total sales of Fiat-branded vehicles amounted to only 49 throughout the country in the duration of the month.
The Fiat 500 compact vehicle constituted the majority of these sales with 21 transactions. Following closely behind is the 124 Spyder convertible sports car, a model based on the Mazda MX-5, which closed the month with 20 sales. The subcompact 500X crossover by Fiat recorded only six units sold, while the 500L subcompact minivan managed to sell just two. The brand’s cumulative sales for the year so far stand at 417.
Comparatively, Fiat’s sales for the same periods last year reached 104 in July and 1,963 year-to-date. The 500X was the top-selling model in 2017 with 793 units sold, while in 2018, it only managed to sell 47 vehicles during the same timeframe. The 500L has never been a strong performer; its sales for the year up to 2017 were 33, and in 2018, only 10 units have been sold.
The Drive reached out to FCA to inquire about the reasons behind Fiat’s significant drop in sales, and an update will be provided upon receiving a response.
Company-wide, even Jeep and Ram, which are crucial for FCA, saw a decline. Jeep sales decreased by 37% in July, though they were up by 8% from the numbers in 2017. Ram experienced a drop of 23% in sales for this July compared to last year, with an overall decrease of 17% in sales for the year. Dodge also suffered a decline of 46% in sales volume from July 2017 and a 28% drop from the 2017 year-to-date figures.
Interestingly, both Chrysler and Alfa Romeo brands showed improvement, with Chrysler experiencing a 38% growth and Alfa Romeo a 12% increase. However, their combined sales only accounted for a small fraction, 3.7%, of FCA’s total sales in July, and their minor gains are insignificant considering the company’s performance in the Canadian market—July 2018 marks the lowest sales month for the company in Canada since early 2014.
