At the heart of McLaren lies a commitment to technology. While many envision the brand merely as an automotive manufacturer or a racing powerhouse, its true strength is rooted in innovative advancements. The company’s Applied Technologies division operates independently, tackling non-automotive projects. One of its latest creations—a cutting-edge exo-skeletal brace—was designed for a wealthy client utilizing some of the most durable materials known to man.
McLaren’s Health and Wellness division was enlisted by Client X, who boasts a net worth that dwarfs the sum of countless ancestors. Men’s Health investigated this unique endeavor, known as Project Invincible, which was aimed at shielding the client’s vulnerable midsection.
Crafted from carbon fiber, Dyneema (the material used in bulletproof vests), and Zylon (an ultra-strong material employed in McLaren’s Formula 1 cars), the specially designed chest plate and shield were created to fulfill Client X’s needs.
“Client X approached us wanting to feel less fragile,” stated Dan Toon, the leader of Project Invincible, in an interview with Men’s Health. “He wanted to regain a sense of normalcy.”
To meet these expectations, McLaren dedicated three months to developing this $250,000 protective device, which aims to safeguard Client X’s torso, previously subjected to multiple surgeries and incidents. Additionally, a rear shield was integrated to protect his slightly compromised kidneys, resulting in a suit that appears almost bionic. Everyday tasks, like fastening a seatbelt, had previously caused him discomfort, prompting a demand for exceptional quality to alleviate his pain.
To tailor the suit to Client X’s requirements, McLaren analyzed his health records comprehensively. This enabled the creation of a seamlessly integrated piece of body armor that could make even Tony Stark envious.
Conducting rigorous impact tests was crucial for McLaren. The protective gear underwent trials ranging from 30 Joules to a substantial 150 Joules, equivalent to dropping five bowling balls, or 75 pounds, onto his chest from a few feet in the air. Under such pressure, the shield functions like the crumple zones in road vehicles, cracking as it distributes the impact across its surface.
Through extensive research and superior craftsmanship, McLaren fulfilled Client X’s requests with precision.
Toon remarked, “Being a billionaire, you don’t receive much overt praise, but he did nod in approval several times during our presentations, which was encouraging.”
After receiving his custom-made protective gear, Client X was impressed enough to refer others with similar health concerns to McLaren, helping to expand its burgeoning Health and Wellness division, which has seen significant growth in recent times.
