Given the popularity of pickup trucks in the US, manufacturers are diligently developing electric pickups that match the capabilities of their traditional internal combustion engine and hybrid counterparts.

However, when it comes to endurance, can electric trucks meet our expectations while traveling considerable distances? Trucks must retain their charges when towing loads, a common task for pickup trucks. Now let’s explore the electric pickups available today and discover how far they can go before requiring a recharge.

All specifications and data have been obtained from the manufacturers’ websites, official press releases, and publicly available information from the EPA. In the absence of specific details, range estimates represent the maximum range for each model. Power outputs and towing capacities are the highest available within the respective ranges for each electric vehicle.

8 Lordstown Endurance

Maximum Distance: 174 Miles

The first electric pickup truck on our list is the Lordstown Endurance. This truck’s fate remains uncertain due to the company’s history of controversy and launch failures, but production of the Endurance began in 2022. However, only three units were sold. Its notably low maximum driving range of 174 miles poses a significant challenge. For instance, when towing a boat trailer, the Endurance’s range reduces to approximately 60 miles. Consequently, a pickup truck that struggles to tow a moderately-sized trailer for over 100 miles may not be a feasible choice for potential buyers.

It’s evident that this truck dealt a severe blow to Lordstown, leading them to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The SEC also accused Lordstown of deceiving investors, painting a bleak picture for the Endurance pickup’s future. Nevertheless, there are reports of Lordstown reemerging under a new guise, Nu Ride, signaling a possible revival. However, the company faces an uphill battle to rectify the situation and offer a viable solution.

7 Ford F-150 Lightning

Maximum Range: 320 Miles

Following is the Ford F-150 Lightning. Once arguably the most renowned electric pickup until Tesla’s Cybertruck debut, Ford chose not to compete with extravagant torque or range figures, avoiding the pitfalls of some competitors in that regard. The F-150 offers two battery variants, with the standard-range providing 452 hp and 240 miles of range. Opting for the extended-range battery increases power output to 580 hp, albeit at a higher cost.

When equipped with the extended-range battery, the EPA estimates a maximum range of 320 miles for the Lightning. The Platinum trim, however, manages only 300 miles due to larger wheels and more standard features. Most owners confirm this to be accurate. Towing with the electric F-Series can slash the range by half, presenting a significant challenge for those planning road trips with trailers, as frequent charging stops become almost unavoidable.

6 Tesla Cybertruck

Maximum Range: 340 Miles

Tesla’s Cybertruck was among the most eagerly-anticipated electric vehicle launches in recent memory. Following multiple delays and challenges, the Cybertruck became available for delivery at the start of 2024. Since then, the vehicle has faced an array of criticisms related to construction quality, performance, and capabilities – not to mention recalls. It’s disappointing considering the substantial sums some individuals invested in the Cybertruck, only to find themselves stuck at Tesla service facilities due to poorly fitting weather seals, absent body panels, and hubcaps that damage tire sidewalls.

Regarding its driving range, Tesla asserts a maximum of 340 miles for the dual-motor model, 320 miles for the Cyberbeast, and just 250 miles for the base RWD variant. Similar to many other electric trucks, attaching a trailer to the Cybertruck reduces real-world range. One owner reported a range of 115 miles while towing a 7,500-pound trailer. To address some of the Cybertruck’s range limitations, Tesla will introduce a bed-mounted battery pack extension which is expected to increase total range to 470 miles for the dual-motor model and 440 miles for the Cyberbeast. However, this accessory comes at a price tag of $16,000 – providing an additional 130 miles of range for the AWD model, equating to $123 per mile gained.

5 GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Maximum Range: 381 Miles

Up next is the GMC Hummer Electric Vehicle Pickup, a robust, bold electric vehicle with an exceptional range estimation. As per the EPA, the GMC Hummer pickup can achieve 381 miles of driving range when furnished with the expanded range, 205.0-kWh, liquid-cooled battery pack. What elevates the Hummer EV’s range to a notable level is its substantial curb weight, topping 9,063 pounds. An electric vehicle of this magnitude achieving 381 miles of range is genuinely remarkable, explaining the necessity for such a colossal battery pack. This figure is for the tri-motor variant, with the dual-motor model reaching 311 miles while delivering up to 570 hp. Additionally, there are exclusive edition models that provide a range varying between 359 and 329 miles.

The GMC Hummer EV faced some criticism upon its initial debut, mainly stemming from GM’s rather deceptive torque rating of 11,500 lb-ft. This number is obtained by computing the combined torque output at each wheel, as opposed to the output shaft, the conventional way of measuring torque. This unconventional torque measurement method is affecting other electric vehicle trucks in the current market. The automaker asserts a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 lbs, a figure that will unavoidably decrease when handling hefty loads.

4 Rivian R1T

Maximum Range: 420 Miles

The Rivian R1T is often viewed as one of the most promising electric trucks on the market. It’s impressively swift as well. Regarded as a meticulously engineered EV, it largely lives up to its range approximations. The particular estimate we are interested in is its 420-mile range when fitted with Rivian’s Maximum battery pack. The year 2025 saw a revamp of the R1 lineup, encompassing the R1T truck and the R1S sport utility vehicle. Both share the same base and drive system, ensuring uniform quality and comparable performance across both variants.

At the basic level, the R1T provides a 270-mile range. The jump from 270 to 420 miles is quite substantial, primarily thanks to the Ultimate battery pack. The ‘Large’ pack allows a range increase to 330 miles for dual-motor models. The tri-motor configuration achieves 380 miles, but the supremely powerful quad-motor edition producing 1,025 hp has not yet received a range rating. Much like other electric trucks, once hauling a trailer, the R1T’s range decreases to about half, with Car And Driver‘s test truck only reaching 110 miles with the quad-motor, standard battery setup.

3 Chevrolet Silverado EV/GMC Sierra EV

Maximum Range: 450 Miles

The Chevrolet Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV both boast an EPA-estimated range of 450 miles. While the Silverado EV is already available for purchase, the Sierra EV is expected to hit the market later this summer. These electric trucks promise a range of 450 miles, but the Denali Edition of the Sierra EV will have 10 miles less due to its exclusive features and a reduced towing capacity of only 10,000 lbs.

Currently, these trucks are solely available in a single ‘first edition’ version, but there have been reports of production delays. Should you decide to purchase the first edition, be prepared to fork out nearly $100k, with the GMC variant being the pricier option of the two.

2 Ram 1500 REV

Maximum Range: 500 Miles

The Ram 1500 REV, an electric pickup, ranks second on our list for its impressive range. It recently obtained an EPA estimate of 500 miles, but to achieve this range, buyers will need to wait until 2026 when the 229-kWh battery pack is released. Nonetheless, once the REV launches in Q4 2024, the standard 168-kWh battery will provide 350 miles of driving range.

The Ram 1500 REV has been patiently waiting for around a year now. The estimated 500-mile range caught the attention of many. However, as previously mentioned, it’s now apparent that a battery pack capable of that range will take some time to be developed. The impressive 14,000-pound maximum towing capacity of the Ram 1500 REV is quite notable for an electric vehicle. Only time will reveal how this capability might impact the truck’s performance in other aspects.

1 Ram 1500 Ramcharger

Maximum Range: 690 Miles (Targeted)

The first entry on our list is actually the Ram 1500 Ramcharger. Although not a standard electric vehicle, it houses a 3.6-liter V6 engine. However, what distinguishes it and makes it relevant to this list is the fact that the V6 engine does not provide power to the wheels; instead, it acts as a range extender. This Pentastar V6 exclusively operates the onboard generator, allowing the electric motors to perform their function. While not technically a hybrid or a conventional EV, it leans more towards the latter in terms of propulsion source. Leveraging this unique range-extending engine, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger is anticipated to achieve a driving range of 690 miles.

The release of the Ram 1500 Ramcharger is still pending. Stellantis has announced that the Ramcharger is expected to be available for purchase at dealerships sometime in 2025. Until then, the extent of its driving range and towing capabilities can only be speculated.
