Valentino Balboni served as a test driver for Lamborghini for four decades, driven by an unwavering passion for cars. In recounting his journey, Balboni reflects on how his love for the brand led him to a fulfilling career, and he generously shares his insights on one of Lamborghini’s most legendary sports cars.

His story began one day when he marveled at a truck unloading exotic cars at Lamborghini. Overwhelmed by their beauty, he walked into the building and submitted an employment application. Soon after, he was hired as a mechanic’s apprentice. While much of his work involved basic tasks like cleaning tools, his most cherished moments came when he moved the cars in and out of the facility—something he occasionally relished by driving them instead of moving them manually, despite this not being part of his role.

Unbeknownst to him, a manager noticed Balboni’s enthusiasm for driving the vehicles. Rather than reprimanding him, the manager offered to mentor him as a test driver for a year. This new chapter began on September 5, 1973, when Balboni took the company’s Lamborghini Miura for his inaugural drive.

In a special video, Balboni showcases a remarkable vehicle—a 1986 Lamborghini Countach. This car stands out because it is one of the few remaining examples of Lamborghini’s most iconic models. Its bold, boxy design succeeded the Miura and paved the way for the brand’s modern aesthetic. The Countach was initially owned by Patrick Mimran, who took over Lamborghini amid financial difficulties in 1978 and led the company until he sold it to Chrysler in 1987.

Balboni expresses pride in his time with Lamborghini and holds a deep affection for the Countach. He regards it not only as a significant milestone for the company but also as the catalyst for his enduring passion for driving. Thanks to its powerful performance and unique drivetrain layout, the Countach continues to evoke the same exhilarating experience for Balboni that he felt as a young apprentice behind the wheel..
