In the current online car auction landscape dominated by platforms like Bring-a-Trailer and Cars and Bids, sales of high-value vehicles have become quite commonplace. However, Supercar Blondie’s newly launched auction site, SBX Cars, has made headlines by achieving a staggering milestone: a 2015 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster was sold for $6 million, setting a new record for online car auction prices.
This $6 million figure, which comes with additional undisclosed fees from the auction house, could result in thousands more due to taxes, title, and registration fees for the buyer—assuming the vehicle is ever registered for road use. There’s speculation that it may instead be destined for a private collection. Unfortunately, SBX has not revealed any information about the buyer or seller, although the seller known as “WFG21” possesses a collection of high-end automobiles.
SBX Cars has quickly positioned itself ahead of established online auction competitors by focusing solely on high-priced vehicles. The site is also branching out beyond cars, offering items such as a futuristic party boat and a drivable robot.
Prior to the Veneno Roadster’s sale, the record for the highest online auction price was held by a 2017 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, which sold for $5.36 million. The successful sale of the Lamborghini broke this record by nearly $700,000, indicating a significant increase in the Veneno’s market value over recent years; this specific car previously failed to sell for an estimated $4.8 million during a 2020 auction.
So, what makes the Veneno Roadster so desirable? For one, it is extremely rare, with only nine units ever produced to commemorate Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary in 2013. This particular model is the second Roadster made and was sold to a member of the Saudi royal family. Its limited use is particularly striking, sporting just 1,778 kilometers (1,105 miles) on the odometer—averaging merely 122 miles per year.
The design of this specific car, featuring a matte black exterior paired with a black-and-green interior, leans towards the extravagant, reflecting the taste of a younger demographic. Despite its unique design, it still boasts impressive carbon fiber wheels.
Interestingly, SBX could soon set another record as it prepares to auction off a Lamborghini Veneno coupe—one of only three ever built— which has only 127 miles on it. Given the significant sale price of the Roadster, expectations are soaring regarding how much the coupe will fetch.
It is uncertain whether the $6 million bidder was aware they would be setting a record, but they likely conducted some market research prior to placing their bid. This understanding would indicate that they were aware of the unique value of the Veneno. Consequently, the next buyer could very well see their purchase setting a new record, continuing the trend of luxury car transactions that remain a hallmark of the wealthiest collectors.
