Kia has commenced the launch of its fourth-generation Rio sedan and hatchback, offering list prices that are lower than those of the previous model. The revamped compact vehicles are being sold alongside the 2017 models that are still available.

The starting price for the 2018 Rio is $13,900 before taxes and fees for the base LX sedan, which features traditional manual roll-up windows. The mid-tier S sedan is priced at $16,100, while the top-level EX, equipped with a voice-recognition system and optional leather seats, starts at $18,400. According to Car and Driver, the 2018 Rio is priced more than $250 lower than its smaller, less sophisticated predecessor.

All trim levels for 2018 are also available in a five-door hatchback configuration for an additional $300. While many American consumers prefer traditional sedans with trunks, the hatchback offers superior space efficiency. Despite measuring over a foot shorter at 160 inches compared to the sedan’s 172.6 inches, the hatchback provides more passenger and cargo capacity.

When the Rio first arrived in the U.S. in the early 2000s, it was the most affordable new car on the market. However, the landscape has shifted, with competitors like the Chevy Spark LS, Mitsubishi Mirage ES, and Nissan Versa S now offering lower price points. The Spark is recognized for its commendable ride quality, the Mirage boasts a competitive 10-year warranty, and the Versa provides comparable interior space. Yet, none of these slightly cheaper alternatives possesses the fresh design or the class-leading 130 horsepower of the Rio.

The idea that you get what you pay for remains relevant.
