Hyundai and Kia have emerged as prominent players in the automotive industry over the last decade. Kia, in particular, has captured attention with a variety of innovative products, including the reveal of its first dedicated battery-electric vehicle built on the E-GMP platform.

On Tuesday, Kia unveiled details about its forthcoming all-electric crossover, the EV6, highlighting the advanced technology and distinct character it brings to the market.

In 2021, making a strong impression with a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) launch is crucial. Some manufacturers focus on leading range, while others emphasize power or distinctive designs. Kia, however, is opting for a combination of strengths.

Kia will roll out the EV6 in various battery and drivetrain configurations, including both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options. Customers can choose between standard and long-range battery packs of 58 kilowatt-hours and 77.4 kWh, respectively. The standout model for range features the long-range battery and rear-wheel drive, boasting an impressive 316 miles per charge according to the WLTP test cycle, although the EPA’s estimate might be lower.

Kia’s EV6 supports 800-volt charging technology, allowing it to recharge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 18 minutes using a DC fast charger—provided a compatible station is available. Additionally, the E-GMP platform allows owners to use their EV to power household devices via a vehicle-to-load function. This means that a standard air conditioner and a 55-inch TV could run for over 24 hours, or it could even be used to charge another electric vehicle that has run out of power.

Performance-wise, Kia will provide five distinct power options depending on the selected battery and drivetrain. The standard range battery offers 168 horsepower in rear-drive mode and 232 hp with all-wheel drive. Long-range configurations provide a boost to 226 hp for rear-drive and 320 hp for all-wheel drive.

The top-tier model, the EV6 GT, will deliver a remarkable 577 hp from two electric motors powering all four wheels, enabling it to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 161 mph.

The interior of the EV6 matches its exterior appeal, featuring dynamic lines and vibrant colors. The cabin is designed with the driver in mind, boasting two 12-inch screens for the gauge cluster and infotainment. An augmented reality heads-up display provides navigation guidance, driver-assistance features, and other essential information, while the infotainment system allows for practical tasks such as locating nearby charging stations through Kia Connect.

Kia plans to launch the EV6 in select global markets, including North America, during the latter half of 2021. Reservations may start as early as today in some regions, though final pricing details remain unreleased.
