Your final opportunity to own the iconic doors-off off-road Jeep Wrangler with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine will be in the 2023 model. The diesel-powered Wrangler, after just 3 years of production, is said to be ceasing alongside the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.

Diesel engines have been phasing out gradually since the emissions scandals of 2015, with the previous FCA facing recent legal battles over diesel emissions violations. In August, a federal judge ruled that Stellantis had to pay $300M for alleged defeat devices found in over 100,000 Ram and Jeep vehicles. Despite FCA’s initial denial and involvement in the lawsuit, Stellantis is responsible for the penalties.

As per information from jlwranglerforums.com, Stellantis has notified Jeep dealers about a special limited production version of the Wrangler Rubicon diesel named Farout. A photo shared by forum member Redrockjk reveals details of Farout, including options and an image of the vehicle, which bears resemblance to a standard Rubicon model.

The unique Farout touches seem to be restricted to a “3.0L D” badge denoting its diesel engine, red interior accents, and wheels borrowed from the Jeep Gladiator. This emblem is exclusive to the Wrangler Rubicon diesel variant. It appears to be a minor update aimed at generating final interest before the EcoDiesel engine is discontinued.

One intriguing aspect of the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel is that these engines are manufactured by the Italian company VM Motori, a subsidiary of Stellantis. VM Motori has been crafting these engines for North American vehicles since 2014, with an upgrade in 2019. Despite being used in vehicles like the Ram 1500, the engine showcased remarkable fuel efficiency. It was arguably the most impressive engine option for the Wrangler, fulfilling a variety of needs.

Stellantis has not yet officially declared the end of Wrangler diesel production. However, with the confirmation of the discontinuation of Ram 1500 EcoDiesel production, an official announcement regarding the Wrangler should be forthcoming.
