The chassis of all present Lotus models is based on an iteration of the extruded bonded aluminum structure dating back to 1994. With the Elise and Exige Final Editions now available to bring delight to enthusiasts globally, the U.S.-market Evora GT is entering its last year of production. When production ceases, the Hethel factory will pave the way for the enigmatic successor to all three models, currently only known as the Type 131. Before that transition takes place, Jay Leno opted to take a red Lotus Evora GT for a spin and test its capabilities over 500 miles, confirming that it’s a “remarkable offering” that also boasts impressive fuel efficiency. Having driven a very similar GT410 Sport in Europe back in 2019, I wholeheartedly concur.
The evolution of the Lotus Evora platform since its inception in 2010 is remarkable, featuring a 3.5-liter V6 engine supercharged to deliver 416 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque (or 332 with the optional automatic transmission). Capable of reaching 188 mph, the 2020 Evora GT stands out as one of the most melodious sports cars available. Combine it with a highly satisfying six-speed manual gearbox, and Lotus adds a limited-slip differential to the mix. The starting price for this bundle of excitement is slightly below $100,000, which might seem steep compared to a similarly mid-engined 2021 Corvette but is justifiable for a sophisticated analog driving experience. Exclusivity is a given.
The construction quality of the Evora is top-notch, and with the optional carbon fiber package, it exudes luxury through its appearance and feel. The interior leans more towards traditional rather than cutting-edge, yet it seamlessly integrates with your phone via Bluetooth. The experience is further elevated by the impeccably balanced Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and the sturdy aluminum gear lever.
The robust Lotus-tuned 3.5-liter V6 engine boasts ample power courtesy of the linear delivery of its supercharger. With the Evora’s nimble handling in corners, it’s easy to overlook how swiftly it accelerates in a straight line as well.
Characteristics of the 2020 Evora GT also involve achieving 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and a power-to-weight ratio of 301 horsepower per ton. This level of performance is complemented by 19 and 20-inch forged alloy wheels, AP Racing brakes, and Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tires.
Having stated that he has driven the previous Evora GT “500 hard miles,” the only thing left to ask is when Leno will acquire one to place beside his other Lotus—a ’60s Elan?
