Renowned drag racer Jason Line boasts an impressive record of 44 victories in the competitive NHRA Pro Stock category, along with clinching three Pro Stock season titles.
When not engaged in professional drag racing, what does Line choose to do?
It seems he indulges in recreational drag racing.
At 42 years old, Line typically pilots the Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro Pro Stock machine professionally. However, during a recent rare break from his busy schedule, he revved up his cherished 1970 Buick Gran Sport, a vehicle he has maintained and raced since his teenage years in Minnesota.
Having relocated to North Carolina now, he visited the nearby GALOT Motorsports Park in Benton with his Buick, where he secured the top spot in the Stock Eliminator category. Reflecting on this experience, Line expressed, “I derive great satisfaction from working on my own car, and after some tweaks to my Buick, I was eager to test its speed.”
The Buick clocked an impressive 6.317-second run on the eighth-mile track (while Line aced the last NHRA Mello Yello event in Las Vegas with a quarter-mile time of 6.673 at 205.73 mph in his Pro Stock Camaro). Despite reaching the finals, Line was narrowly edged out by Jeff Adkinson’s 1969 Camaro.
The GALOT experience proved to be thoroughly enjoyable for all attendees, with GALOT likely standing for “Get A Load Of This.”
Line expressed his delight, stating, “What a fantastic weekend. The venue was wonderful, and the people were incredibly welcoming.” Joining Line at GALOT were his wife Cindy, daughter Emma, and son Jack. “Spending time with my family was the highlight of the weekend. My son was so thrilled that he willingly skipped his Friday night dodgeball game to prepare our Stocker. Cherishing our shared passion for cars, this is an invaluable bonding opportunity with Jack. He has been immersed in this world for so long, and now he gets to witness the intricacies firsthand. Collaborating with my son on restoring an old muscle car is truly special for me as a father.”
Before the final race, Jack turned to Line and remarked, “Dad, this is the most fun I’ve ever had. Can we do this every weekend?” The sheer enthusiasm displayed by his children filled Line with joy, making this racetrack visit one of his most cherished memories.
As for his prized Buick, Line’s 1970 Buick Gran Sport boasts a 455-cubic-inch Stage 1 engine featuring a Quadrajet carburetor, standard Buick heads and manifold adhering to NHRA Stock Eliminator regulations. The vehicle incorporates a Scott McClay TH200 Metric transmission, Meziere starter, ATI balancer, MSD ignition, Cometic gaskets, Strange Engineering axles, DENSO spark plugs, and runs on Maxima racing oil.
