In the upscale lobby bar of a downtown Los Angeles hotel on Monday night, a senior executive from Fiat-Chrysler casually mentioned the impressive Nürburgring lap time of the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio to a group of journalists and PR representatives. Shortly after he departed, one Jaguar PR representative remarked that the Alfa sedan’s 7-minute and 32-second record was unlikely to last.

The following evening, Jaguar introduced the new Jaguar XE SV Project 8, a powerful sports sedan boasting 529 horsepower from the company’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division. Alongside the unveiling of this vehicle, a new Nürburgring lap time was announced. The XE SV Project 8 clocked in at an impressive 7 minutes and 21.23 seconds, confirming its status as the fastest four-door sedan on the challenging Nürburgring track. However, the company’s press release included a caveat: “Jaguar is pleased to announce that the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is now the world’s fastest four-door sedan of production-intent specification….”

Essentially, the XE SV Project 8 is a late-stage prototype aspiring to become a production vehicle. Once it is officially produced, the model will be limited to just 300 units worldwide, with a starting price of $187,500, making its title of “fastest” a significant investment.
