The idea behind it was simple: take a standard W124 E-Class (1985-1996), drop in the largest V8 engine available, and give it a menacing blacked-out look. Of course, there’s more to its creation than that, but you get the gist. With its powerful engine, widebody design, understated yet impactful AMG badges, and a name that struck fear in M5 owners, The Hammer stands as a true German icon. As Chris Harris rightly puts it: “When there’s a Hammer around, everything else fades into insignificance.”
Clocking a top speed of approximately 180 miles per hour, the Hammer was the go-to choice if you craved the speed of a Countach or Testarossa but still needed the practicality of a sedan, wagon, or even a four-seater coupe. It was truly one of a kind in its era. Some argue that today’s German super-sedans and wagons owe their existence to the groundbreaking Hammer.
