When it arrives on US shores in the upcoming months, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 will boast an impressive range of 361 miles.
After completing its final EPA testing, the Ioniq 6 in the SE Long Range RWD trim has secured an EPA-estimated range of 361 miles, surpassing Hyundai’s late last year target of 340 miles. The Long Range model has also achieved a rating of 140 MPGe, putting it on par with the efficiency of the leading Lucid Air models currently featured on FuelEconomy.gov’s Top Ten. Meanwhile, the Ioniq 6 SE AWD model has an impressive range of 316 miles as per EPA estimates.
It is noteworthy that these figures were achieved with 18-inch wheels. Models equipped with 20-inch wheels do not perform as well. The Ioniq 6 SEL and Limited trims, running the larger wheels, have respective ranges of 305 miles and 270 miles for RWD and AWD models.
The Ioniq 6 utilizes various advanced features to aid in smooth airflow. Unlike traditional active aero systems that generate downforce, here they are employed to reduce drag. The presence of active air flaps on the front bumper helps direct airflow efficiently around the front, creating an enveloping air barrier around the vehicle. Additional features like wheel gap reducers, a rear spoiler, flow separation traps, and a full underbody cover all contribute to achieving an incredibly low drag coefficient.
While Hyundai’s new sedan may not be among the top longest-range EVs currently available in the market, its 361-mile range is undeniably impressive. This range is sufficient for everyday driving requirements and can handle road trips with some advance planning. The Ioniq 6 is poised to establish a strong position in the market as deliveries commence in the early months of this year.
