Known for its expertise in modifying Toyota Land Cruisers and Ford Broncos, Icon, a California-based restomod specialist, has expanded its catalog to include a completely revamped 1975 Jeep Cherokee.

Named Safe Flight, this Cherokee is part of Icon’s Reformer series, which includes unique builds that blend modern amenities for improved drivability while maintaining a classic appearance. According to an Icon press release, founder Jonathan Ward also aimed to resolve certain design flaws seen in the original Cherokee.

It’s important to note that Jeep did not seek input from the Cherokee Nation when selecting the name and design for this vehicle. To remedy this oversight, Ward consulted tribal leaders and studied Cherokee art to ensure the project reflects authenticity and respects cultural traditions.

The name Safe Flight is inspired by a design traditionally used on boats and blankets by tribe members embarking on dangerous journeys. This pattern is displayed on the vehicle’s sides as well as on interior elements such as gauges and door trim.

Beyond the Cherokee-inspired design, the SUV’s exterior showcases a Porsche Chalk gray finish topped with a Bentley black roof. Inside, it features two styles of leather upholstery, replacing the original vinyl, complemented by German wool square-weave carpeting and an Alcantara headliner. Like other creations from Icon, Safe Flight is equipped with a modern climate control and audio system, along with power windows and door locks.

This vehicle merges components from both a 1975 Cherokee and a 1965 Jeep Gladiator pickup truck, but it rides on a custom chassis featuring coil-over suspension and Fox Racing nitrogen-charged shocks.

Under the hood, a robust 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine delivers 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque, ensuring the vehicle retains its Mopar heritage. This powertrain is paired with a General Motors 4L85E 4-speed automatic transmission, enabling four-wheel drive functionality. Additionally, Brembo brakes ensure efficient stopping power for the 18-inch wheels fitted with BF Goodrich All-Terrain K02 tires.

Safe Flight stands out as a unique creation, but for Jonathan Ward and Icon, it’s just another example of their innovative work. Ward famously thought it was a brilliant idea to equip an aging Mercedes-Benz 300SEL with the supercharged V-8 from a C6 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, showcasing his bold approach to automotive design.
