Throughout the years, car manufacturers have made numerous bold design decisions, some of which are considered eccentric. However, Hyundai, known for its emphasis on practicality, has generally kept to a more conventional approach. Recently, the Australian branch took a surprising initiative in a rather contentious market, deciding that South Korea should produce not only a Cabriolet version of its SUV but also accommodate seven passengers. Introducing the Santa Fe Cabriolet.

Technically speaking, the Santa Fe Cabriolet isn’t a true convertible. This is because the SUV lacks a roof, resembling more of a unique safari vehicle that isn’t actually convertible. The term “one-off” signifies that this concept car is not slated for production, particularly due to concerns over passenger safety in the event of a rollover.

Earlier this year, Hyundai revealed its refreshed Santa Fe SUV, emphasizing a new design direction and showcasing the brand’s development into a more economical choice for consumers. And now, we have this…

In reality, the creation of this vehicle was short-lived, originating solely for a television commercial. Hyundai required a roofless version of the Santa Fe SUV to highlight features that were difficult to capture with the camera. After filming, the Cabriolet was put away until Car Advice requested the chance to take the vehicle for a test drive.

The Santa Fe Cabriolet now enters a rarefied group of open-air crossover and SUV vehicles, joining the ranks of such models as the Nissan Murano Crosscabriolet and the Land Rover Evoque, the latter of which is still available. Interestingly, other manufacturers are eager to penetrate this niche segment, with Volkswagen even announcing an investment of over $100 million to create a convertible version of its upcoming T-Roc for entry into this exclusive market.
