Hyundai has unveiled the all-new Kona compact crossover, a dynamic SUV designed to offer generous space and advanced technology for urban adventurers.

In addition to a stunning high-resolution image and the vehicle’s name, Hyundai has shared comprehensive details about its “Urban SUV.” The automaker is targeting adventure enthusiasts who require a sturdy, versatile hatchback to accommodate their active lifestyles.

Hyundai claims that this vehicle marks the beginning of its future design direction, starting with the introduction of the Kona’s new Cascading Grille, which will feature in many upcoming models.

The Kona will showcase innovative design elements that maximize cockpit space while maintaining a compact overall size. Customers can choose between a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 145 horsepower or a more powerful 1.6-liter direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder with nearly 30 additional horsepower; some markets will also offer a turbocharged three-cylinder and a turbodiesel option. Additionally, buyers can select from either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), similar to the Santa Fe and Tucson models.

This crossover will be equipped with the comprehensive safety features typical of Hyundai vehicles, including Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Assist, and Blind-Spot Collision Warnings. It also boasts a state-of-the-art infotainment system, offering integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a forward-thinking head-up display.

The Kona derives its name from a well-known region on the Big Island of Hawaii, following Hyundai’s trend of naming crossovers after beloved cities and tourist destinations. Who knows—perhaps we’ll soon see models like the Hyundai Walla Walla and the Hyundai Beverly Hills.

The Kona is expected to be available for purchase in Korea this month, with a global rollout planned for later this year.
