Consistent with earlier reports, Hyundai is reportedly gearing up to launch a high-performance N version of its Tucson compact crossover. As noted by Auto Express, insiders within the company have confirmed that this sporty Tucson will compete against models such as the Ford Edge ST and the forthcoming Volkswagen T-Roc R.
According to the report, the Tucson N is expected to deliver more than 340 horsepower and accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in under six seconds. This is nearly double the power of the standard Tucson, which features a 2.4-liter engine producing 181 horsepower. The sources from the UK publication indicate that Hyundai is “not interested in producing second-rate cars with N badges” across various categories.
Moreover, the performance-oriented Tucson is anticipated to be Hyundai N’s flagship vehicle until the arrival of a groundbreaking two-seat hybrid halo car, described as “brand-changing” and “exotic.” An unidentified source reportedly shared with Auto Express, “We are going to take our time with this one—because when it appears, it will overshadow everything else in its market.”
While luxury automakers have long been producing high-performance SUVs, sporty crossovers from mainstream brands remain a relatively new development. At present, the Edge ST is somewhat of a standout in this segment, but the anticipated T-Roc R, alongside the potential Hyundai offering, may herald a new trend of quick, affordable crossovers. We might soon see Toyota release a Gazoo Racing version of the RAV4 or Honda affix an Si badge to the CR-V.
