Conducting Tests in a Controlled Environment

Marine Corps Air Station El Toro has become a vital testing ground for AMCI Testing. Once a key military aviation site, the 4,700-acre space now serves as an area for closed-course evaluations, although it has been diminishing as new developments emerge.

On a warm autumn morning, I arrived at El Toro to meet Guy Mangiamele, AMCI’s director of vehicle testing, who guided me to observe the testing setup involving a BMW 330i and a pre-production Kia K5 GT.

Present for the day were testing manager George Doganis and chief test driver Gary Thomason, both of whom have notched a combined 28 national autocross championships. It was evident that the testing values straightforwardness over flashiness, which may explain their lesser-known status in a field that typically thrives on marketing appeal.
