Exciting news for VTEC enthusiasts who love engine swaps: Honda is now offering its most powerful production engine ever sold in the United States as a crate engine. This means you can acquire a standalone Civic Type R engine without the need for an entire vehicle, crazy wings, or inflated dealer prices (at least none that we know of). You can simply obtain the engine itself. The first person to install this in a Dodge Demon will surely earn major bragging rights online.
The engine in question is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, known as the K20C1, which powers the much-praised and somewhat controversially styled new Honda Civic. This powerhouse generates an impressive 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. Aimed at both amateur and professional racers, this engine will be available through the HPD Honda Racing Line program, with a retail price of $6,520.
For the first time, VTEC fans in the U.S. can now install Honda’s latest engine into practically anything that can accommodate it. A factory-turbocharged EK9 hatch? That’s practically a given at this stage. Interested in fitting this into a new base hatch for a DIY Type R? Rest assured, there won’t be any dealer markups on this engine. Want to turn it into a quirky coffee table? Just know it may impact your dating life.
