Honda is not only recognized for its automobiles and motorcycles but is also famous for manufacturing top-notch lawnmowers, power tools, and off-road vehicles. It holds the title of being the largest producer of internal combustion engines globally. However, a significant change is on the horizon as the company is set to discontinue its range of gas-powered lawnmowers by the end of this year.

The unexpected decision was initially communicated to Honda’s power equipment dealer network in the U.S. in October 2022, according to a report by Motor1. Dealers were informed that the production of gasoline mowers would cease in September 2023, with remaining inventory available until 2024 or until stocks run out. Despite the production halt, Honda intends to provide parts and service support for its gas-powered equipment in the future.

“The decision to discontinue lawnmower production is influenced by market factors such as stricter environmental regulations, evolving customer preferences, and our commitment to expanding profitable products within our range,” stated Honda. Notably, this marks the end of gas-powered Honda lawnmowers, but the company will still offer other lawn and garden products, as well as industrial equipment like GX engines, generators, and water pumps. The U.S. market will continue to receive support for service and spare parts.”

The decision will have implications for Honda’s manufacturing facilities in the U.S., but significant changes are not expected. Reports from Family Handyman suggest that the power equipment plant in Swepsonville, North Carolina, will assume responsibility for ATV production currently managed by Timmonsville, South Carolina, which will transition to exclusive production of side-by-sides.

Interestingly, the discontinuation of gas-powered lawnmower production is specific to the U.S. market only. A representative from Honda UK confirmed that there are no plans to stop production for the European market. The spokesperson emphasized that Honda Motor Europe manufactures petrol lawnmowers at the Honda France plant and remains committed to the entire product lineup.

Honda has not prioritized the introduction of electric garden tools in the U.S., with the exception of Miimo, the robotic mower. Regardless, its electric mowers and trimmers have received favorable reviews in international markets. There is a possibility of re-entering the American lawnmower market with electric models from abroad, especially considering the impending restrictions on small gasoline engines in states like California. The Drive has reached out to Honda’s power equipment division in the U.S. to inquire about future plans in this regard.

For now, it appears that some of the most esteemed gas-powered lawnmowers in the market will soon vanish from stores. If you are in need of a new lawnmower and have your heart set on a Honda, it’s advisable to make the purchase sooner rather than later.
