This year marks the 70th anniversary of General Motors’ Arlington Assembly Plant, a milestone worthy of celebration. To add to the festivities, the plant recently produced its 13 millionth vehicle, just five years after reaching the 12 million mark. A round of applause is due for the 5,410 employees who help make this North Texas facility a success.

The Arlington plant has a rich history, having previously produced classic models like the Chevelle, Cutlass, El Camino, GTO, Impala, and Roadmaster. In response to the rising popularity of trucks and SUVs, the plant transitioned to manufacturing body-on-frame SUVs in 1997 and expanded its capabilities with a stamping facility in 2012. Today, it exclusively manufactures all new gas-powered full-size SUVs in General Motors’ global lineup, including the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade-V, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Yukon.

The 13 millionth vehicle produced at the Arlington plant is a noteworthy 2024 Cadillac Escalade-V, with a starting price of $154,290 before any additional options or fees. This luxury SUV has been the top seller in its category in North America since 2014 and is scheduled for a significant upgrade in 2025.

The Escalade-V comes with a six-figure price tag, significantly higher than the standard Escalade, which begins at $83,890, due to its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine. While the base engine generates a respectable 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, the V-Series version boasts an impressive 682 horsepower and 653 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. However, potential buyers might want to overlook its 13 miles per gallon combined fuel economy.

The Arlington Assembly Plant operates at full capacity, running 24 hours a day, six days a week. The assembly team works in three shifts to produce over 1,350 vehicles daily. In addition to meeting domestic demand, these vehicles are shipped to more than 30 countries, highlighting the high demand for large SUVs.

Covering 250 acres, the Arlington facility encompasses six million square feet, making it one of General Motors’ largest plants. In 2023, the plant achieved a record production of over 34,000 vehicles in a single month. As excitement builds for the future, one can only wonder when the 14 millionth vehicle will roll off the assembly line and which model it will be.
