When it comes to creating the ideal plow rig, there are typically two approaches: one can either opt for a straightforward setup with a used pickup and plow, or go all out with a high-end configuration. Opinions on this matter can differ greatly, but it’s undeniable that having luxuries like heated leather seats while clearing snow is a treat.
This past weekend, we indulged in a premium plow rig, which significantly enhanced our experience. Driving a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali equipped with a Duramax diesel engine and a Western Plows MVP 3 V-Blade plow, we tackled the final remnants of winter. Coincidentally, New York had recently endured a major snowstorm, leaving approximately 12 inches of snow on the ground that required clearing.
While the Department of Public Works had officially cleared the main streets in Yonkers, NY, numerous side streets, back roads, and driveways remained untouched. Maneuvering the large 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD—measuring 239.5 inches long without the plow—required careful strategy to navigate around immobilized vehicles and confined spaces. Luckily, the MVP 3 V-Blade’s adjustable scoop and wing features enabled us to optimize our plowing efficiency, allowing us to clear unwanted snow in one seamless motion rather than requiring multiple passes.
Thanks to the powerful 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel V8 generating 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque, we never needed a running start to push snow down the street. Whenever the truck started to slip, the on-demand four-wheel drive came into play, ensuring we could keep moving. The only drawback of using this $70,000 truck as a plow was the barrage of alerts—especially the front-end collision warning—triggered by the plow. Every gear change, plow adjustment, or engine restart sent the beeping and seat vibrations into overdrive.
The Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission excelled under pressure, seamlessly managing the challenges of plowing without showing signs of strain. Despite the potential for increased wear on a vehicle’s drivetrain when outfitted with a plow, the GMC Sierra 2500HD handled each challenge adeptly. Transitioning between plow locations, the transmission shifted smoothly through its gears, without a hint of protest. The truck showed no sign of overexertion, even when faced with more than a foot of wet snow repeatedly. For those considering using this truck for plowing, GMC offers a 220 amp alternator and roof light wiring for an additional $235, but it may be wise to target more affluent areas for profitable plowing jobs.
Once the plowing season concludes, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the truck’s smooth ride. Although our test vehicle featured an off-road suspension equipped with Rancho shocks, we comfortably navigated the roads without bouncing excessively.
Would we recommend this rig for someone with a generous budget? Absolutely. With this truck, maintenance and unexpected repairs become less of a concern. Plus, the 2017 Sierra 2500HD Denali makes for a stylish and luxurious daily driver, ensuring a comfortable experience on and off the job.
