General Motors Readies 2022 Hummer EV for Delivery Following Rapid Development Cycle
After an unprecedented two-year development phase, General Motors is poised to deliver the 2022 Hummer EV to eager customers. Set to hit the market just in time for the holiday season, the first Edition 1 versions of the heavy-duty electric truck will be available in December. GMC’s Vice President Duncan Aldred announced that this model will feature an impressive range of 329 miles.
This announcement follows our test drive of the electric Hummer and comes on the heels of President Joe Biden’s promotional drive. The surge in interest and boosted reservations, spurred by the President’s short spin in the vehicle, prompted GM to finalize pre-production and prepare for regular manufacturing intended for those who have made reservations.
In addition to the 329-mile range for the Hummer EV Edition 1, Aldred provided insights into the expected ranges for other upcoming models set to launch in 2023. Preliminary information indicates that several versions of the truck may offer a longer range than the Edition 1, potentially leveraging the same nearly 200-kilowatt-hour battery alongside more economical drivetrains. GMC plans to introduce a more affordable two-motor configuration in addition to the three-motor setup featured in the 3X and Edition 1 models.
Aldred also revealed that about “nearly half” of the 125,000 individuals who have shown interest—referred to as “hand-raisers”—will convert their interest into actual reservations, an encouraging figure for a vehicle priced in the six-figure range.
Following President Biden’s experience with the Hummer EV, Aldred noted that the rate of reservations surged “sevenfold,” and website traffic for the Hummer EV increased by an impressive 230 percent.
For those hoping to acquire a Hummer EV in time for the holidays, it’s important to note that reservations for the Edition 1 trucks have already closed. However, other trims of the pickup, as well as a slightly smaller SUV version, will soon be available, with deliveries of the 3X models expected to reach dealerships by fall 2022.
