BMW’s design evolution has undergone significant transformations. Despite the ongoing presence of kidney grilles, critics have raised concerns about their overpowering front-end dominance in recent years. The Neue Klasse represents the latest aesthetic direction from BMW, tailored specifically for its all-electric lineup. The upcoming model set to embody this vision is the electric X5, also known as the iX5. Our undercover photographers recently captured it undergoing road tests, clad in heavy camouflage.

BMW’s fresh electric vehicle design exudes a futuristic vibe, subtly toning down the kidney grilles to offer a slimmer, more upright appearance. Leading the Neue Klasse lineup is the iX3, serving as the electric counterpart to the X3. Production for the iX3 is slated to begin in July 2025, hinting at the imminent arrival of the iX5.
The iX3 Bears Resemblance to the Electric X5
Upon initial inspection, the vehicle appears quite akin to previously seen iX3 prototypes, but a discerning eye will notice subtle discrepancies. This model boasts greater width and length, although these distinctions may elude casual observers.
While the camouflage effectively conceals much of the exterior, observant viewers can discern certain features after allowing their eyes to adjust to the visual clutter. Notably, the door handles bear a resemblance to those spotted on select Audi Q7 prototypes, positioned atop the doors near the windows rather than conventionally integrated into the door sides.
Dual Power Options
It seems there are two distinct models displayed in the pictures, each showcasing different powertrain possibilities. Upon closer inspection, one of them sports prominent red brake calipers, hinting at being the more potent option. Additionally, the tire dimensions are observable on the more standard model, featuring 275/40-22 tires in the front and 315/35-22 tires at the rear.
The X5 is anticipated to be offered in both gasoline and electric variants, so more masked prototypes are expected. Currently, we are witnessing only Neue Klasse SUVs, which aligns with the fact that they constitute a significant portion of BMW’s worldwide sales and in particular regions represent a substantial percentage of total BMW sales. Anticipate the introduction of sedans as well, and once they are unveiled, we will promptly provide you with images of the prototypes.
